New York Fashion Week has officially kicked off, and judging from the first day of collections, it is all about calming tones for Spring 2016.

Pantone recently predicted its top 10 colors for the next season, and beyond an aesthetic appeal, there was a psychological reason for the color choices. “The fact that technology has gotten so overwhelming and so 24/7 ha really created a great part of the need for these comforting, softer colors. Technology plays a huge part in people feeling like they want to stop the world and get off,” said Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman.

That is why the runways of BCBG, Erin Fetherston, Zac Posen , Tadashi Shoji, Marissa Webb and Adam Selman were full of peach, shades of blues, lavender and the number one color of the season (as by Pantone) rose quartz.

While the ultimate in calming tones, white, also reigned supreme in the first round of collections, most of the designers shunned bright and bold colors in favor of soothing hues, with delicate floral detailing. Adam Selman may have been the most literal, with his beach motif the epitome of calm and cool.

And while Zac Posen might have closed his show with an LED Coco Rocha, the rest of his collection was a pastel dream.
